Some Things Really Annoy Me
One of these things is everyone’s tendency to state the obvious. After I read all of Douglas Adams’ Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy books I understood this. The character Ford Prefect, an alien come to do research on the Earth, notices this. At one point, he complains about our tendency to state the obvious: “‘it’s a nice day out, isn’t it?,’ ‘Wonderful weather we’re having, wouldn’t you agree?’ or ‘We’re going to die, aren’t we.’” Terribly annoying, don’t you think? Of course, I do this sometimes myself, but I try to avoid it.
Another thing that bothers me is people’s need to talk all the time. This is another idea from The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. When Ford Prefect first came down to Earth, he noticed that everyone was always talking. At first he thought this was because otherwise our jaws would freeze in place. He quickly dismissed this idea in favor of another: that if we stopped talking, our brains would actually start working. I think Ford’s right.
