Zack and Miri Make a Porno Review

I’m not sure when we last saw a movie on opening weekend, but we decided to go out for Zack and Miri Make a Porno, Kevin Smith’s latest film. If you’re a fan you’ll see it, but if you pass you’re not missing much.

I’ll say up front that we had some reservations about liking Zack and Miri. We like Kevin Smith’s work a lot, but the subject matter of this one left us a little unsure of how much we’d enjoy it. The notion of Zack and Miri reaching such financial desperation obviously has great potential for comedy, but getting into porn isn’t interesting to us.

Unfortunately, we just didn’t find it very funny. I don’t even feel like there was an awful lot of comedy to the script. The story and acting were pretty good, and it was filled with some good dialogue in Smith’s style. Sherree noted that Seth Rogen (playing Zack) was something of a puppet for Smith: his delivery and expressions are exactly what you could expect if Smith played the role himself.

I think I would equate Zack and Miri to Jersey Girl in many ways: a good story with great dialog and monologues (writing dialog is what Smith is best at, in my opinion), but definitely not a comedy in his more successful style of Clerks.
