While on vacation we drove up the Mount Washington Auto Road to reach the summit. I’ve never driven up the auto road, and it was a little bit of a hairy experience! Coming down was actually much easier. We had a good time exploring the summit and the Mount Washington Observatory, however it was very windy and barely forty degrees.
At the treeline is a lot of interesting growth that we stopped to inspect and photograph. The trees have to fight so hard to grow in this harsh environment they even get an awesome name: krummholz.
Post script to all my outdoors and Scouting friends: I’ve hiked up Mount Washington several times (3? 4?), but have never driven up it, so I feel justified in deciding to take the car!
