Bachman’s R/C Toys Batmobile

A bad photo I took long ago.
Another bad photo I took long ago.

This is a replica Batmobile from the 1989 Batman movie. It's an on-road, direct-drive car I bought in June of 1996. I bought the "kit" car which came preassembled and included paperwork in a brown cardboard box with no radio gear. Most of the Batmobiles you see on eBay are the ready-to-run version, which was also prebuilt but included a Hitec Challenger 260 radio.

I've never run this car or even put radio gear in it; it just sits on a shelf. It's really not much of a collector's item. New it's price was $150 and I'd be lucky to get that if I sold it on eBay. (Compare that to the ready-to-run version, which can fetch $300!) The kit also came with a "catalog" of parts for it (from 1989) and the price of the body is listed at $90, so if I ruin this one I might as well by a new car! This "catalog" is actually only a single sheet of paper.

Speaking of the body, might I add that the detail of it is great. I wish I bought it when it was originally released in '89--a number of nice accessories were available for it. In particular, there's a light kit that I would've gone for. Working head and taillights would just be too cool.

More Photos

As this has become a fairly popular page, I decided to take some new photos of my Batmobile. Obviously, they're much better than the old ones, above.

i have that same batmobile but with the coccon case and with the light kit, would you like to buy it?

I was looking for parts for my batmobile when I accidentally found your page. I managed to pick up the ready to run version put out by richmond toyys a couple of years ago at a garage sale for 50$. Most of it still worked. over the years most the aging parts have failed but I mave managed to retrofit parts for newer RC's from the hobby shop to keep it going, i,e faster motor, digital speed control, new radio gear and servos by futaba. I am currently on the hunt for the lighting kit you spoke of earlier. I have been searching for it for five years. If you have any Ideas please help. I can be contacted at carterconrad@hotmail.com. Please if you can.

Selling the one with the lights by any chance? jasmine4ever4@yahoo.com

Jasmine4ever4,
I've sent you an email.
The light kit you can buy right from that website hosting my car pics. Just tell him the batmobile guy sent you and you want the same kit.
The car I bought from RC Car Kings.
Let me know if you need any more info.

Just a heads up to everyone. The light kit is not a direct replacement for the original. You will need to make your own mountings and modifications to make it work. If you are not so inclined, or have a pristine model that you think in time will pay for your kids college and don't want to modify, it is not for you. Other wise, have fun!

I obtained on of these cars around 1991 while a marketing manager for a major automotive company. I removed the car from the box once and put it away in the basement. I was transferred several times after that and the box with the car was moved also. I am now retired and came across the car stored in the basement. Please let me know if there is any interest.

Hi woody
I would like to make you an offer for your batmobile car. reply back to my email sharkfan2@sbcglobal.net

how much are you asking?

We (RC Car Kings) bought the remaining inventory of the RichMans Toys Radio Controlled Batmobiles many years ago. Through the years we have run out of a few of the original parts and have either replaced them or eliminated them.

There are not any of the original boxes left and the hubcaps have been eliminated. The radio system has been replaced with a Hitec system. The chassis and body are the original parts. The rear drive has been upgraded to a direct drive system. The transport case and light kits are long gone. The RTR versions do have the original manual.

RichMans Toys were going to release a kit version of these Batmobiles. They never did because their contract with Warner Bros. and DC Comics expired. We purchased the entire remaining inventory from them and are assembling them with radio (RTR) for $159.99 or assembled without radio for $99.99 (radio installation instructions are included).

The store owners have an original complete RTR Batmobile new in the box that they would sell for $799.99. I do not have any other pictures at this time beyond what is on the web site.

Yes we have replacement parts. The upgraded direct drive system uses a 32 pitch spur gear and pinion gear on a Mabuchi 540 motor. It uses a hardened steel driveshaft and an aluminum gear adapter to mount the spur gear to the drive shaft. The original drive gear was a planetary gear system. Those are no longer available. In the ten years we have been selling these vehicles we have never had anyone ask for replacement direct drive parts except pinion gears or spur gears. They are available for $4.99 each for spur gears and $3.99 each for pinion gears. The front steering parts are made from Team Associated pan car parts (i.e. 10L, 10L3 or 10L4). The other internal parts are all aluminum and we have never had to sell them because they dont break.

The radio parts in the RTR version are Hitec. The speed control is a mechanical wiper style speed control and can be upgraded to any 1/10th scale electronic speed control in the market today if you wish to do that. The mechanical speed control comes in both versions (assembled kit or RTR). It has a white Tamiya style battery plug on it and the vehicle is powered by a 7.2 volt battery. With the Mabuchi 540 motor, mechanical speed control and a 7.2 volt battery this R/C Batmobile has a speed of 20 to 25 miles per hour.

Roy

I've been looking everywhere for parts/info for my 1989 Richman Toy Batmobile and stumbled on your site. I'm sure you get tired of answering questions about it but I bought mine around 1990 at an auction from a hobby store that was going out of business. I only got the car and the remote, no light kit or anything. I'm not an RC expert nor is it my hobby but i am a Batman fan and this is the best Batmobile ever concieved IMO. I had it in storage and apparently mice got to it and ate a little of the body (no biggy cuz I can use a bit of model putty and a re-paint and you'll never know) but they also got to a couple of the tires. Is there any way to to replace the tires and is there a light kit available? I would like to refurbish this car as I love it and when I first bought it I remember how fast it was and how cool it would be to have the lights and lenses and all on it. I never even got the box it came in so as you can imagine it was basically just the body, the chasis, the motor and the remote. I'm not even sure if it will still run without buying a new battery or motor but if I can start by making it look right again that would be a huge start. Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Anyone willing to sell the hubcaps? or attach a close-up pic And I'll make my own.

Thanks,
Jim
